Yoga Posture of the Month – Child’s Pose

Balasana – Child’s Pose

Balasana is a resting pose that can be used at any time, and is especially enjoyable after a challenging pose.

Indications:

  1. Kneel on the floor. Bring your big toes together, and separate your knees about as wide as your yoga mat. Bring the hips back towards the heels.
  2. Lay your torso down between your thighs. Stretch your arms forward, keeping them shoulder width apart and rest the elbows on the ground.
  3. Rest your forehead and base of the nose on the ground, allowing the back of the neck to be long.
  4. Balasana is a resting pose. Stay anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes.

* To deepen the pose exhale a few times by the mouth with a sigh and feel the stretch deepen.

Variations:

  • If you have difficulty sitting on your heels in this pose, place a folded blanket between your back thighs and calves.
  • Another variation of Child’s pose, is bringing the knees together and the arms alongside the thighs with the forehead resting on the ground.

Benefits:

  • Calms the body, mind and spirit and stimulates the third eye point.
  • Stretches the low back
  • Helps relieve stress and fatigue
  • Tones the abdominal organs
  • Relieves back and neck pain
  • Stimulates digestion and elimination.
  • Gently stretches the hips, thighs, and ankles

Contra-indications:

  • Recent or chronic injury to the knees.
  • Diarrhea
  • Pregnancy
